PATIENT INFORMATION
WHAT IS DIFFUSIMAX®?
DiffusiMAX is a new way to take medications - through your skin!
HOW DOES DIFFUSIMAX CAUSE MEDICATIONS TO PASS THROUGH MY SKIN?
An important role that the skin plays is to act as a
protective barrier. Most drugs will not pass through the skin and the
usual creams or lotions will not either. DiffusiMAX is a unique
preparation with special properties that allow it to pass through the skin
barrier. Most importantly, it can carry medications along with it - and it
can do this without hurting the skin!
WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF TAKING
MEDICATIONS THROUGH THE SKIN?
There are three benefits to using DiffusiMAX to take medications.
-
A drug can be applied directly to the area to be treated. For
example, arthritis medications in DiffusiMAX can be applied to the
skin over sore joints and the medications will be delivered into the
joint to provide pain relief.
-
Medications that are applied to the skin lessen side effects such as stomach irritation.
-
For people who have difficulty taking pills, a skin preparation may be more convenient.

WHAT TYPES OF MEDICATIONS CAN BE PUT INTO DIFFUSIMAX?
Many different medications can be used in DiffusiMAX including:
-
anti-inflammatory drugs for arthritis or muscle pains
-
muscle relaxants
-
nausea and motion sickness medications
-
treatments for nerve pain
HOW DO I APPLY DIFFUSMAX FOR ARTHRITIS?
First, wash your hands. Then rub a thin layer of
DiffusiMAX cream into the skin over the sore joint. Wait a few minutes
before putting any clothing over the area to allow the DiffusiMAX to dry.
It will have a slightly waxy feel. After application, wash your hands with
cold water. Keep the preparation from your eyes to avoid irritation.

HOW DO I APPLY DIFFUSIMAX FOR OTHER CONDITIONS?
The exact way you apply DiffusiMAX will depend on the
specific medication it contains and the condition for which it is being
used. In some cases, you will rub it over the involved body area, such as
when the treatment is for sore muscles or nerve pain. When DiffusiMAX is
being used as a way to get medication into the bloodstream, you place it
in areas where your skin is thinner, such as behind the ears, on the
inside of the wrists, or over the collarbones. In some cases, you will be
instructed to cover the area of application with plastic wrap or special
dressings. Your pharmacist will give you specific instructions with your
prescription.
HOW MUCH DIFFUSIMAX DO I APPLY?
This will depend on what medication is used. For many
conditions, such as arthritis, you simply apply a thin layer of DiffusiMAX.
When certain drugs are put in DiffusiMAX, the quantity you apply must be
very precise, and your pharmacist will instruct you on how to get just the
right amount.
ARE THERE ANY PRECAUTIONS I NEED TO TAKE?
Make sure you wash your hands both before and after
applying DiffusiMAX. Avoid getting it in your eyes - if you do, rinse with
cold water. Store DiffusiMAX in its original container. Always keep the lid on when not in use.

WILL DIFFUSIMAX UPSET MY STOMACH?
One of the advantages of DiffusiMAX is that it allows
local delivery of medication, so stomach irritation is avoided.
WILL DIFFUSIMAX IRRITATE MY SKIN?
DiffusiMAX is hypoallergenic so skin irritation
is rare. It is approved for use as a skin moisturizer! It is
possible that a medication put in DiffusiMAX could produce irritation;
so if you develop a skin reaction, discuss it with your pharmacist.
The specific actions of your DiffusiMAX preparation
will depend on the medication it contains. No claims are made
as to the safety or efficacy of your prescription.
